Remember how in the movie Alien, science officer Ash turned out to be an evil robot? Remember how after Sigourney Weaver knocked his head off, these strange thingies started falling out of him, which looked like enlarged lymph nodes, and this milky substance was leaking all over?
Well, it turns out that we, humans, actually have similar-looking liquid inside of us, and it is called chyle (pronounced “kyle”). Chyle is that part of our lymph, which contains droplets of fat, and therefore has the milky appearance. The rest of the lymph in our body is clear. The word lymph itself is derived from the name of the Roman goddess of fresh water Lympha.
Like blood, which flows through the blood vessels, lymph flows through the lymph vessels and plays a huge role in maintaining the chemical balance in our body. It removes waste, maintains the protein circulation and transports interstitial fluid back into the venous circulation. The lymphatic system is like the sanitation department in our body.
Unlike blood, which flows in a circuit and has a pump to keep it moving, lymph flows in one direction and needs external forces to push it forward. These outside forces are contractions of adjacent muscles, pulsations of large arteries, and breathing.
If you have an active lifestyle and are always on the go, the moving parts in your body keep moving and do an adequate job to keep your lymph flowing. And if not? What if, like many of us, you spend most of your day sitting behind a desk?
If so, your lymph flow might me impeded. And remember, the lymphatic system is a sanitation department of your body. If it’s not doing its work properly, then the excessive water, proteins and inorganic substances could be building up under your skin making it puffy and less radiant.
And here is where I come in. Remember, for the lymph to flow it needs an outside force. And your massage therapist can well be it. Try it out. Come visit us and have a lymphatic massage.
